Are you interested in becoming a journalist, but don’t know exactly what they do? Are you interested in journalism internships but discouraged by the lack of opportunities? If so, come to the journalism training workshop presented by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan on Saturday, Nov. 29. The one day session given by a team of experienced foreign correspondents will give students an introduction to journalism and a practical glimpse of a reporter’s job through an exercise covering a mock news event. Through an exercise, adapted from an actual disaster training program used by Reuters news service, students will learn about interviewing, fact-gathering and writing techniques. Students will also participate in a mock press conference. Please note that this workshop, which will be conducted entirely in English, is all day, unlike some of the past workshops, which were half day. We have lengthened the program, so students have more opportunity to interact with the journalists.

Students, who have completed the program will be entitled to enter their names on a part-time student assistant list that will be made available to FCCJ journalists, who are interested in hiring a part-time assistant on a project or for longer periods of time. The FCCJ will set a minimum rate of 1,000 yen per hour, but interviewing and negotiations for the positions will be up to the individuals themselves.

This will be the sixth such workshop that the FCCJ has conducted. Nearly 300 students from more than 20 universities have attended past workshops, which have been held in Tokyo and Osaka.

WHO: Any student -- undergraduate or graduate, Japanese or foreign – may sign up to attend the class, regardless of experience or academic major. Students, who attend the workshop, are not required to sign up to be an assistant. Space will be limited to 60 students. First come, first served. Professors are invited to attend as observers, free of charge. Please note that the program is a repeat of past workshops. Students may attend again, but priority will be given to those who are attending for the first time.

The Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan is a shadan hojin non-profit organization, established in November 1945, to promote friendship, harmony and mutual welfare among its members, to defend the freedom of the press, and to increase friendly relations between Japan and other countries. The first members were a group of journalists accredited to General Douglas MacArthur's headquarters. The club has since grown to more than 300 working journalists, representing news organizations from around the world. FCCJ is run by an elected board of directors and appointed committees.

ジャーナリストになりたいけれど、どんな仕事かわからない？報道業界のインターンシップに興味があるけれど、チャンスがなくてがっかりしている？それなら、日本外国特派員協会（FCCJ）主催11月29日（土曜日）のジャーナリズム・トレーニング・ワークショップに参加しましょう。経験豊富な外国特派員によるこの1日ワークショップでは、模擬ニュースイベントの取材などの練習を通して、記者の仕事がどういうものなのかを知ることができます。練習では、インタビューの方法、事実調査、ライティングの技術を学び、模擬記者会見にも参加します。またワークショップのすべては、英語で行われます。

ワークショップ後、外国人記者のアシスタントのアルバイトを希望する場合は、名簿に名前を記載することもできます。FCCJの規定で、アルバイトは1時間1,000円以上となっています。アルバイト採用時の面接や詳細の交渉は、学生と外国人記者の間で直接行われるものとします。

対象：学部・大学院レベル、日本人・外国人などに関わりなく、大学の学生なら誰でも申し込みできます。またジャーナリズム分野での経験や大学での専攻分野は不問です。アシスタントのアルバイトの申し込みは必須ではありません。募集人数はスペースの関係で、申込先着順60名です。東京以外の地域から参加する場合、移動手段の手配は参加者本人が行い、交通費も参加者本人が負担するものとします。
