Summary:
Professional Luncheon,
Nobuo Tanaka,
Executive Director, International Energy Agency
The speech and Q & A will be in English.
Description:With talk of oil prices possibly hitting $200 a barrel and the use of biofuels helping to push up global food prices, the July Group of Eight Summit in Hokkaido is expected to focus on energy and food security.
Of course, skyrocketing gasoline, bread and cooking oil prices aren't the only energy-related problems the world is facing. How to deal with global warming is the other major topic and how energy-guzzling developing nations, like China and India, will fit into a new framework to limit greenhouse gases might be another.
Nobuo Tanaka, the executive director of the International Energy Agency, which is charged with advising industrialized nations on energy policy as well as to keep track of consumption and energy trends, will address these and other issues at the Club.
A former top bureaucrat in the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, he led many negotiations for the World Trade Organization as director-general of the Multilateral Trade System Department. He graduated from Tokyo University with an economics degree and joined the ministry in 1973. Tanaka took his current position last year.
