Summary:

Press Conference:
Yuriko Koike, Former Minister of Defense and Minister of Environment;
Yoshio Yatsu, Former Minister of Agriculture;
Representatives of Global Legislators Organization for a Balanced Environment, Japan (Globe Japan)

Language:

The speech and Q & A will be in English and Japanese with English interpretation.

Description:

With strong push by Japan get a new protocol to cap greenhouse gases, the Group of Eight Leaders' Summit in Toyako next month will have their work cut out for them.

That's because leaders not only have to deal with emission cuts and environmentally sustainable growth but to ensure that supposedly eco-friendly biofuels don't hurt the world's poorest, which are already at the highest risk from climate change, by pushing food prices up even more.

In the run up to the summit, two top legislators from the ruling party, Yuriko Koike and Yoshio Yatsu, will hold a press conference at the FCCJ to discuss the environmental organization's June 27-29 meeting in Tokyo. Key issues expected for discussion are climate change and international security.

Koike, who is rumored to be a dark horse candidate for prime minister, is a former environmental and defense chief, and Yatsu is a farm expert and former agricultural minister. They are eminently qualified to provide background and discuss Tokyo's position on these issues.

GLOBE Japan was affiliated with GLOBE International in 1990, as the Japan chapter of the forum for political and business leaders to encourage dialogue and collective initiatives related to the environment.
