Description:*Preview "Tokyo Sonata" at the FCCJ, 19:00 - 21:00 Wednesday, August 27 (Japanese with English subtitles).
Kiyoshi Kurosawa has made himself a leading name in Japanese cinema. One of very few contemporary Japanese directors to have received international recognition, the 50-year old director is the creator of original works like "Cure," "Charisma" and "Bright Future."
"Kiyoshi Kurosawa [is] a prolific and sui generis talent who packs more ideas into one of his low-budget specials than most Hollywood studios eke out in the course of a year," wrote Manohla Dargis, movie critic for the New York Times.
Kurosawa's new movie, "Tokyo Sonata," marks a turning point in his already long career. The winner of the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival this year, it surprised and charmed its audience. Although the movie deals with many familiar Kurosawa themes (the inability to communicate, etc), it depicts internal struggles within an ordinary Japanese family -- far from Kurosawa's former universe.
Kurosawa will come to the FCCJ on August 28 to discuss "Tokyo Sonata." Do not miss this rare opportunity to see the movie, prior to its late-September opening, and to meet one of Japan's best-known contemporary filmmakers.
