Description:

A "Polar Ice Researcher", and a "Physical Scientist", what do they have in common? As the co-winners of the prestigious Blue Planet Prize, they share a life-long concern for the environment.

Dr. Claude Lorius, Director Emeritus of Research at CNRS, a glaciologist, and the first French winner of the prize, was selected for his contribution in disclosing past climate change based on polar ice sheet core analysis and other work. He began his research on Antarctic glaciers and ice sheet from the mid-1950s and made a total of 22 polar expeditions, mostly to Antarctica.

Professor Jose Goldemberg, a Brazilian physicist, played a major role in the adoption of a bio-ethanol program, making major contributions in formulating and promoting energy policies in Brazil. In 1992, as the Environment Minister of Brazil, he was active in preparing the renowned "Rio Earth Summit".

This year marks the 17th award of the Blue Planet Prize, the international environment award sponsored by the Asahi Glass Foundation. Two prizes are awarded to individuals or organizations each year that have made major contributions to solving global environmental problems through scientific research and its application.

The two recipients of this year's Blue Planet Prize will come to the FCCJ to discuss their achievements and to offer their views of the future.
