Description:

"Is The World Prepared For An Accessible Arctic?"

With a survey showing that over 20% of future oil and gas reserves may be found inside the Arctic Circle, energy development in the North is a major economic, environmental and security issue.

Therefore it's not surprising that Russia, Canada and some Nordic countries have taken initiatives aimed at trying to secure a part of the region's mineral wealth for themselves.

At the same time, the region is now undergoing fundamental changes due to global warming.

Mead Treadwell will talk about the dramatic changes in the Arctic environment, and the implications for Japan, the U.S. and the global economy. He will also discuss Arctic energy, security and sovereignty, trade, mineral production and more.

Treadwell, a long-time resident of Anchorage, Alaska, was appointed to the U.S. Arctic Research Commission in 2001, and was named chair by President Bush in 2006.
